Watch For These Three Factors Before You Choose An Accounting Firm

Finding the right accounting firm is no small feat. There are so many variables to consider: what is their reputation in the industry? Is the firm the right size? Are they worth the value?

Before you make the decision, think about these factors:

1. Accessibility

Your accountant will become an important part of your business. Though they’ll be working with numbers, it is ultimately the people who are important. Will you be able to reach them when you need to? Do they share their cell phone numbers? Will you have access to upper-level staff? Are they reactive in case of emergency?

You want to feel like you can trust the accountants you’ll be working with. Take time to interview the firms you’re considering, and don’t be afraid to ask to meet with the staff members who will be working on your account.

When an accountant is there for its clients, they notice. Schlenner Wenner & Co. is one of the most trusted accounting firms in Central Minnesota. We were named “Best Accountant in Central Minnesota” by St. Cloud Times readers in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

2. Size

The largest accounting firms leave a big footprint on the industry, namely “The Big Four:” PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG, Ernst & Young and Deloitte. They employ hundreds of thousands of people and have a broad approach to accounting.

But there are also regional, boutique and local accounting firms, which may fit into a niche with smaller issues, such as payroll or sales tax, and have a more personal approach. You may get more face time with a smaller firm.

3. Value

Fees may be a consideration for you, but be sure to think about the value you’ll get for the fee. You shouldn’t pick an accounting firm based on price alone.

Ask around – your friends, your colleagues, lawyers, and others in the industry – to find the firm’s value in the marketplace and its reputation. Does it have expertise in the industry? How do you know? Look for the organization’s certifications, accreditations, and relationships with other firms.

Schlenner Wenner & Co. may be regional, but as an independently owned member of RSM US Alliance – a premier affiliation of accounting and consulting firms – we have the infrastructure of a national firm.

Consider these factors and you’ll find an accountant who will become a key component of your team, advancing your business to the next level. It’s no small decision.
